Avon High School students who exemplified positive character traits during the first marking period of the school year were recognized Tuesday during a special, celebratory lunch in the High School Library.
Held as part of the Avon High School’s Braves Way program, students in grades 9 through 12 were nominated by teachers or school staff over the past couple of months for exemplifying the ideals set forth in the school’s Braves Way matrix whether in an academic, social, behavioral or emotional capacity.
Each of the six ideals - brave, responsible, actively involved, value yourself and others, effort and safety - correspond to a letter in the word “Braves.”
“It’s teachers that say ‘Hey, this student has made a difference in my classroom,’” said Ms. Leigh Major, a business teacher and member of the school improvement team at the high school who helps run the program. “It’s nice because it’s not just academics. It can be for anything that’s on the matrix. This is for anybody that's really shown they are putting forth an effort, they care, they’re responsible, they're nice to their peers.”
One student Major herself nominated this marking period, for instance, went “above and beyond” to make sure a project she was working on in Major’s marketing class was as good as it could be.
“She worked on it after school, she worked on it before school, she said ‘Ms. Major, what else can I do to make sure it’s perfect?’” Major said. “She was wonderful… she put in a lot of effort and she showed she cared.”
Selected students enjoyed pizza and ice cream in the high school library and were presented with certificates in recognition of their selection.
“It’s really a great thing,” said Major. “...It’s just a nice way to honor students.”
