Yesterday’s meet against Geneseo was the first of the season and already Avon’s swimming and diving team is rewriting the district’s record books. Female swimmers on Avon’s co-ed team broke nine girls records in five events Tuesday night. The oldest, from 1993, was nearly 30 years old.
It didn’t take the swimmers long to get started as the team of Kaitlyn G., a sophomore, Joleigh C., a senior, Jessie C., an eighth grader, and Claire S., a junior, swam a 1:56.25 in the first event of the meet, the 200 medley relay, shattering the old school record of 2:03.26 set in 1993 by more than seven seconds. The time also broke the old pool record of 2:02.86 set in 2004 by Aquinas.
Kaitlyn, Joleigh, Jessie and Claire teamed up again in the 200 freestyle relay, where they put up new school and pool records with a time of 1:46.16, besting the previous records of 1:47.72 set in 2006, and in the 400 freestyle relay, where they swam a 3:56.25, beating the old school and pool records of 3:57.28 set in 1998.
Joleigh's 24.17 lead-off time in the 200 freestyle relay - a four-person race in which each team member swims 50 yards - also broke the 50 freestyle record of 24.87 she set last school year.
Finally, Joleigh also set new school and pool records in the 100 backstroke. Her time of 1:00.55 Tuesday night bested the old school record of 1:01.01 set in 1997 and the old pool record of 1:00.94, set in 2001.
"It was definitely a fun meet and a great way to start the season," said Head Coach Dan Paganin.
The Braves won the meet 103-66 and now stand at 1-0 on the season. The team’s next meet is Friday at home against Hornell.
