Dear Avon,
This communication is a follow up on information shared with you Sunday evening following Governor Hochul’s press conference. Schools were hoping to get additional information prior to the lifting of the mask requirement tomorrow.
As has been our practice, we met with the LCDOH to discuss the expected guidance. Further, we also collaborated with all schools within our BOCES. Sadly, the updated official guidance was not sent until after 7:15 this evening. Because the official guidance was dropped late this evening, we wanted to get you a very high level summary as we prepare for tomorrow. We also want to let you know that Avon will continue to follow applicable directives or requirements.
Based on our progress to date, LCDOH supports removing the mask mandate, making masks optional, and will not impose any additional requirements.
The state’s mask mandate in schools is ending effective tomorrow: Wednesday, March 2nd. Students, staff, service providers, and visitors will no longer be required to wear a mask in school settings, including on the school bus.
As expected, there is an exception to this masking requirement. Individuals who have tested positive and are returning after day 5 must wear a mask on days 6-10. In short, days 1-5 should be at home and days 6-10 involve wearing a mask and distancing while eating. This is more a continuation of current practice than it is an exception.
The guidance clarifies the need for specific communication related to contacts. We will assess how we will best meet the need.
Further, staff and service providers who have chosen to not verify their vaccination status must continue to test on a weekly basis.
Individuals who are sick are to stay home.
We will continue to make masks and tests available while supplies last.
Masking will be a choice of individuals and families. The choices of the individuals and families are to be respected, and we will do all we can to ensure all stakeholders operate in a mutually respectful manner.
For those of us who welcome this unmasking with open arms, thank you. It is understood that you have practiced patience for some time.
For those of us who are concerned that a layer of protection is being removed, we thank you as well for your courage as we move forward.
Advancing as a school community will take all of us.
Please reach out to your supervisor, building principal, or me with questions.
As has been the regular process, we will continue to review the guidance and collaborate to clarify even further. Important updates may be provided in separate communications.
Let’s be brave. Let’s be BRAVES.
