We’re thrilled to announce we’ll be welcoming children’s author and illustrator Brian Yanish to the Avon Elementary School on Tuesday, May 24!
The author of such books as “Shark and Bot,” “Pirate Chicken: All Hens on Deck” and “Build-It Book: Volume 1,” Yanish boasts a varied and creatively-inclined professional career. He’s worked with Jim Henson Productions, trained as a special effects moldmaker, written and performed comedy, designed children’s software, toys, accessories and apparel and even created a recycled arts enrichment program, ScrapKins, that inspires children to see creative potential in everyday junk. Oh yeah - did we mention he made a guest appearance on “Sesame Street?”
During his visit to Avon, Yanish will give mini-assembly presentations to our pre-k through fourth grade students, said Library Media Specialist Jessica Mucci.
"Each grade level will come down to the library and Brian will talk about his life as an author, his books, and he will also be giving some demonstrations about his illustrations as well as his 'junk rethunk' concept,” said Mucci, who’s been reading Yanish’s books with her students during library classes over the past couple weeks. “If time allows at the end of the assemblies, Brian will open it up to students for questions. Students will also have a chance to purchase one of his books and have Brian sign it while he is here.”
At the end of the day, Yanish will lead third and fourth graders in a maker workshop to create box puppets out of cardboard.
“He will show them how to do it step by step and he will be there to answer any questions,” Mucci said. “The main focus of the workshop is how to get creative with materials that you have around the house. Anything the students make, they’ll be able to bring home.”
