Dear Avon Community,
As you have undoubtedly seen, our country’s latest mass shooting took place earlier this week in Uvalde, Texas. The morning of May 24, a gunman carrying an assault rifle entered a classroom in Robb Elementary School and murdered 21 people – 19 of them children.
This despicable act of mass murder took place two days before students were to be dismissed for summer break. Many were undoubtedly looking forward to family barbecues, roasting marshmallows, sleeping over at friends’ houses and all those other activities that make summer such a special time.
As we prepare to head into the long, Memorial Day weekend, we want to encourage all of our Avon families to take advantage of this time away from work and school as best you are able. Be together, take joy in each other’s company and tell your loved ones they are loved.
Here in Avon, it’s on all of us to play a positive role in the creation of a world with less hate and less violence. We must shoulder this task daily, work at it constantly, center it in all we do, and every decision we make.
We will choose hope and kindness. There is no other way forward.
Sincerely,
The Avon Board of Education
