Avon was well-represented among the recently announced winners of Genesee Valley BOCES’s Anthology 2022 Literary Contest.
Staged annually, the contest is a chance to recognize and reward excellence in student writing while, at the same time, allowing for freedom of choice in style and subject matter.
The contest is open to students in grades five through 12. Awards are given to the top three entries in each category. Honorable mention recognitions may also be given at judges’ discretion.
Students submit their work in February and March. This year, there were 130 submissions. Submissions are then reviewed by a panel of judges and winners are announced in April.
This year’s judges were retired and current English professors at Genesee Community College and a local published author who writes for young audiences.
Avon writers were recognized in the eleventh and twelfth grade poetry and short story categories.
Ella D. took first in the poetry category with “Perfect” while Avery L.’s “Perceiving” took third. Brian L., Lauren C. and Adrienne P. received honorable mention recognitions for “Old Stone,” “What We Sow, They Will Reap” and “Mine,” respectively.
