We’ve scheduled three public information sessions to provide an overview of our financial management to be held in the coming weeks.
The recent State Comptroller’s report on our district’s finances, while appreciated and helpful, does not present a comprehensive picture.
Nor does it provide an adequate characterization of our conservative budgeting approach which was necessitated in no small part by persistent unpredictability from New York State, looming mandates from the State Education Department and a promised, yet still unfinished, new school funding formula from the governor and state legislature.
Each of these three sessions will address content from the Comptroller’s report, which can be read online on our website at the link below, and provide an overview of the district’s financial management before an open question and answer session. The three sessions will be held in the Middle School Library, 191 Clinton St., Avon, at the dates and times shown below:
• Tuesday, Nov. 19 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
• Thursday, Nov. 21 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
• Tuesday, Nov. 26 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Additionally, information will be presented at our Nov. 18 Board of Education meeting, which begins at 6 p.m. in the Middle School Library. This meeting will include an opportunity for public comment but will not include a Q&A session per our usual protocols.

Remember Clara D., who will be repping Avon this weekend as a member of the New York State School Music Association’s Area-All State Orchestra?
Well, she won’t be going alone because seniors Emma D. and Hannah C. were selected as members of NYSSMA’s Area All-State Treble Choir!
Emma and Hannah will join Clara at Newark High School in Wayne County for a whirlwind of rehearsals tomorrow and Saturday morning before performing Saturday afternoon.
Couldn’t be prouder of our Area All-State student musicians!

Avon is a special place, part 1,867: Senior Caleb C., who just finished his final year of cross country competition, ran in our third annual Veterans Day 5K this past Saturday in honor of all of the veterans of our country’s armed forces, but especially his grandpa, John Rice.
“He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1968 to 1972 and copied Morse Code for an Air Force security unit,” said Caleb. “After the race, I ended up giving him my bib because I ran it for him.”

Sophomore Clara D. will represent Avon this weekend as a member of the New York State School Music Association’s Area-All State Orchestra!
A cellist, Clara was selected for the ensemble following an arduous audition process last school year.
She’ll perform at Newark High School in Wayne County this Saturday, Nov. 16, alongside the best student musicians in NYSSMA’s eight-county zone 2 region.
Congratulations, Clara!

Maisy the Therapy Dog and her owner, Doreen Fasoldt, stopped by our High School Library this morning to mix and mingle with our students and staff!
A four-year-old golden doodle, Maisy and Doreen have been working with RocDog, a Rochester-based non-profit that brings certified therapy dogs to the masses, for nearly three years.
The pair travels to schools, hospitals, nursing homes and colleges across the region “to put smiles on faces and spread joy,” said Fasoldt.
Judging by the reactions of our students and staff, we’d say Maisy and Fasoldt know what they’re doing!
Moving forward, Maisy will be visiting us every 2nd and 4th Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Your Avon River Hawks lept out to the early, 1-0 lead over Le Roy Friday in the Section V Class C1 girls volleyball final before the Oatkan Knights stormed back, taking the second and third sets to go up 2-1.
The fourth set was a nail-biter as the Knights overcame an early-set deficit to set up 3 match points at 24-21. The Hawks would take the next 3 points to tie things up at 24-24, but Le Roy was not to be denied as the Knights won the next two points to take the set, 26-24, and capture the Class C1 title.
A huge thank you to senior Delaney B., who traveled to Caledonia Friday to capture every single exciting second of action and a special shout out to juniors Jessie C. and Mollie G., who were named Section V Class C1 Tournament All-Stars!

The good news is we’ve already had 184 people register for our third annual Veterans Day 5K and Fun Run this weekend, which tops the 146 we had sign up last year!
As if that wasn’t good enough, the even BETTER news is that we’re STILL accepting registrations!
The race is set for this Saturday, Nov. 9, with all proceeds once again going to benefit Livingston County veterans.
Registration for the 800-meter kids Fun Run is free with a food donation. The race starts on the high school track at 9:30 a.m.
The 5K starts at 10 a.m. Race registration costs $10 for those under 18, $25 for adults and $50 per family. Veterans run for free. Runners and spectators are asked to park solely at Avon Middle School, 191 Clinton St.
This 5K has become a highlight of our year here at Avon Central Schools. We hope you’ll consider coming out to help support a worthy cause!

If you see Clara D. or Emma D. in the hallway today, make sure you give them a shout out for making the 2024–25 Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra!
This is the highest of Hochstein’s four-tier youth orchestra program and selection for it is highly competitive.
Students compete annually for a seat and, if selected, perform professional repertoire in at least three concerts throughout the school year.
Clara, a cellist, and Emma, a violinist, will be performing in their first concert of the year this Sunday, Nov. 10, at 2 p.m. in the Hochstein Performance Hall.
Congratulations, Clara and Emma!

Our varsity girls cross country team took 12th place at the Section V Class C Championship Saturday at Letchworth State Park.
Maria G. (21:03.2), Sarah W. (24:13.7), Paige P. (25:30.7), Lev S. (26:50) and Lena K. (27.48.2) were the top finishers for the Hawks.
“Maria’s resume of league all-star recognitions and sectional patches speaks for itself,” said Head Coach Josh Williams. “This was her first race coming back from injury which took her out of training for a month and she’s already looking forward to next season - I can’t wait to see what she does.”
Paige P., Lev S. and Quinn F. (28:00.5) all had season’s best times Saturday with Lev S. in particular showing incredible improvement this season, dropping more than 8 minutes since her first race in September.
“Thanks to coach Baumer, our modified girls team was great too,” said Williams. “If someone is looking to compete, win and have fun next year, our girls are going to crush it.”

Our varsity boys cross country runners wrapped up their 2024 season Saturday morning with a second place showing at the Section V Class C Championships at Letchworth State Park.
Luigi M. (17:24.2), Wyatt K. (17:38.7), Hunter R. (17:42.4), Jordan M. (17:48.2) and Sage P. (19:13.4) took 9th, 12th, 13th, 15th and 41st, respectively, for the Hawks for a final score of 88 points - second only to winner Livonia’s 59.
“The boys ran strong, Livonia ran stronger.” said Head Coach Josh Williams in a tip of the cap to the winning Bulldogs. “The improvement these boys have shown this season has been incredible and our underclassmen showed they are going to be a headache for anyone that races us for years to come.”
The Hawks have been dealing with injuries all season, said Williams, including to number one runner Finn S., who’s been sidelined since mid-September.
“Finn’s effort and dedication to the team even after his injury kept us together throughout the season,” added Williams. “He was at every practice and was there to lend support when his teammates needed it most.”
Williams also praised his seniors for their “incredible effort” and mentorship, likewise, throughout the entire season.
“Hunter R. had massive gains for this only being in his second running season as he got into the mid-17s and showed an innate ability to go deep whenever necessary,” said Williams. “We were also fortunate to have two-sport athlete Jordan M. toe the line for us this season. His willingness to put himself out there, oftentimes the morning after playing a football game, has been awesome and I’m excited to see what he can do after he moves on to compete at the collegiate level.”

Our varsity boys soccer team dropped a heartbreaker in Honeoye Falls Saturday night, falling 0-1 to the Hornell Red Raiders in the Section V Class B championship game.
The Hawks had a few scoring opportunities but couldn’t convert against the Raiders, who netted the game’s lone goal - the first Avon gave up the entire postseason - around the 58-minute mark.
Hawks end their season 12-6-1. Not the finish we know our boys wanted, but we’re still proud of the fight this team showed until the very end.

A successful first, Beetlejuice-themed Tales & Tea Leaves event of the school year yesterday in our High School Library!
Students performed poems, read stories and sang songs for their peers - all under the watchful eye of everyone’s favorite bio-exorcist.
Shout out to our yearbook club photographers for capturing the festivities!
