On Monday, members of our Level I PageTurners team headed to Caledonia-Mumford Central Schools for their fall competition and ALMOST came away with the win! Because we have so many team members - 25 students in grades 3 through 5 - Avon students broke up into two smaller teams for the sake of the competition, said Coach Jessica Mucci. “There were a total of 10 books on our fall list and I am so proud to say that we had multiple students on our team that read either 9 or all 10 of them,” said Mucci. “This shows amazing commitment to an activity that is in addition to their regular school work. Our students showed great sportsmanship and pride in representing our school and showing what they know.” The next PageTurners competition is in March in Avon. Results from Monday’s competition at Cal-Mum are as follows: 1st: St. Agnes (27 points) 2nd: Avon Team 1 (24 points) 3rd: Caledonia-Mumford Team 2 (23 points) 4th: Avon Team 2 (20 points) 5th: Caledonia-Mumford Team 1 (19 points) (Photos courtesy of Jessica Mucci)

We stopped by Mrs. Lorrie McLaughlin’s classroom last week to check out her sophomore Earth science students’ mineral displays. McLaughlin’s students have been learning about different types of minerals in class and created informational displays about a chosen mineral to help teach their fellow students about its properties. McLaughlin’s students were voting on their favorite displays last week with the winning student in line for a special prize. We’re trying to convince Mrs. McLaughlin to make the prize a diamond, but aren’t sure she’s going to go for it…

Shout out to our Level II PageTurners team, which traveled to Caledonia-Mumford last week for its fall competition. Through two rounds of competition, our team totaled 33 points to finish second out of four teams and only one point behind winner Cal-Mum’s 34 - so close! “It was a very tough match and I am so proud of our small but mighty team of students,” said Coach Jessica Mucci. “We are excited to start working toward the spring competition to hopefully get redemption!” The final scores were as follows: 1st: Caledonia-Mumford (34 points) 2nd: Avon (33 points) 3rd: York (23 points) 4th: Byron-Bergen (15 points) Members of our Level II PageTurners team include eighth graders Emily J., Emma R. and Maddie K. and seventh graders Ben K. and Claire L. Students in Mrs. Elizabeth Patteson’s ceramics/printmaking class have been working with Library Media Specialist Suzanne Freeman and Julie Hengenius, an LMS with Genesee Valley BOCES, to learn how to use a Glowforge - a type of 3D laser printer that can engrave messages and designs on objects. Patteson’s students tried using the device to make a few quick Christmas ornaments they’d designed previously as practice for more intricate projects in the future. We think they turned out great! Last week, Mrs. Emily Schroeder led her freshmen social students students in a silk road simulation in the high school library. Each group of students was responsible for taking on the role of a traveling merchant, a banker or a shopkeeper with the goal of making the most beneficial trades possible and accumulating as much wealth as possible. “This simulation wraps up our study of the Silk Road,” said Schroeder, “and gives students a small taste of what traveling and trade on the Ancient Silk Road may have been like.”

Fourth Grade Chorus members under the direction of Mrs. Kaylee Corell perform Tuesday during our Holiday Choral Concert in the Middle School Auditorium.
Our student musicians came together in the Middle School Auditorium Tuesday night to make beautiful music as part of our 2023 Holiday Choral Concert! Six ensembles performed under the direction of Kaylee Corell and Kristen Maxfield before all coming together near the end of the concert for an all-ensemble holiday sing-along! Our vocal music program has grown by leaps and bounds recently. Over the past two years, student participation has increased by a staggering 50 percent and 160 students in grades 4 through 12 now participate in at least one vocal music ensemble. This growth is a testament not only to our staff and students, but to those who choose to support our music programs. We’re grateful to the more than 600 people who came out to support our student musicians Tuesday and those who do so throughout the year. Your unwavering support and belief in the profound impact of music on a child’s development is a big part of what makes our music program so successful! Help us ‘Fill the Cruiser’ at the Avon Holiday Spectacular! We want to remind those planning on attending the Avon Holiday Spectacular in the village tomorrow to stop by the Avon Lions Club booth and check out Fill the Cruiser, a new partnership between the Lions Club, Stone’s Community Resources and the Avon Police Department. For the past several years, Baylee Barrett, a social worker at Avon Elementary School who also runs Stone’s Community Resources, has organized a gift drive around the holidays to help collect gifts for families in need. The Lions Club’s annual Santa’s Sleigh initiative has the same goal - to collect gifts for families in need throughout the community. So this year, Barrett and Lion Jess Soucey decided to team up. “Chief Joe Geer of the Avon Police Department is donating a police car to be parked near the Lions Booth at the Spectacular so that people can ‘Fill the Cruiser’ with gifts and donations for children this Christmas,” Barrett explained. “We’re looking for donations of toys and fun items for kids of all ages. These donations will then be distributed to families in need through the Lions’ Santa’s Sleigh initiative and our district’s Stone’s Community Resources.” Avon students will also be out in force at the Spectacular tomorrow doing face painting, helping kids write their letters to Santa Claus, selling baked goods for charity and performing a few selections from their annual production of “Scrooge.” The Avon Holiday Spectacular is tomorrow - Saturday, Dec. 2 - from 3 to 8 p.m. along Genesee Street and the surrounding area. Visit the event website at the link below for performance information, an activities map and a schedule of events. We hope to see you there! Link: AvonHolidaySpectacular.com

Our National Honor Society chapter’s food drive wrapped up earlier this week - our student members ended up collecting 6 overflowing boxes full of food and toiletries, which were delivered to the Avon Food Pantry earlier today! Despite seniors collecting some late-breaking donations early this morning, it was the juniors that ultimately collected the most items once all the cans were counted. Shout out to all our NHS members and anyone who made a donation and congratulations on a job well done! (Photos courtesy of Alexe Dunham)

Avon Central School District was recently notified by its dairy supplier, Upstate Niagara Cooperative, that a nationwide shortage of half-pint paper milk cartons will affect its ability to supply its customers - including Avon. In light of this anticipated shortage, Avon Central School District will take the following action: • Continue serving milk as usual until the shortage officially impacts Avon; • Offer whatever milk is available: 1%, 2%, whole, chocolate, strawberry, etc.; • Offer water as an alternative; • Offer milk in individual plastic containers (if they can be obtained) to students in grades PreK-4; and • Offer milk in dispensers to students in grades 5 through 12 as a self-serve option. Many students currently choose NOT to take a milk and may buy bottled water or other drinks instead. In its recent communication with our district, Upstate Niagara stated the shortage may resolve in early 2024 and that it’s working with its own vendors to try to speed that timeline along. Questions should be directed to Director of Nutritional Services Kristen Murphy at kmurphy@avoncsd.org or (585) 226-2455, ext. 1304.
