High School Principal Ryan Wagner spoke with classes about what kinds of choices they can make to maximize their success inside and outside of school during some start of the year assemblies this morning.
It’s important to get the year started off on the right foot!
Solid turnout for our annual Senior Sunrise Breakfast this morning.
The sunrise may have been a little lacking, but the company certainly wasn’t as members of the class of 2024 kicked off their senior year with some cider, donuts and high-stakes game of four square.
First day of school? Check!
Welcome back to each and every one of our students - we’ve missed you!
On this day in 1945, at around 9:04 a.m. local time, Japanese Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu and General Yoshijirō Umezu signed the Japanese Instrument of Surrender aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay and, in so doing, brought World War II to an official end.
The National World War II Museum in New Orleans estimates more than 400,000 Americans died fighting in the war. Eight attended Avon Central Schools.
A memorial outside the entrance to our Middle School recognizes the sacrifice of these eight valiants, “who gave the last full measure of devotion to their country.”
Today, 78 years later on VJ day, we remember these eight men:
• Sidney Archibald
• Frank DeFranco
• Donald Gilbert
• Carl Ippolito
• Clarence Meekin
• Augustus Miller
• Frederick Moran
• James Moran
Over the past few weeks, we’ve been putting together our district’s first ever State of the School publication and we’re excited to share the finished product with you!
The impetus behind this new publication stems from some interested community members who’ve asked for additional information about our district’s operations, information not typically covered in our newsletter, budget information or social media posts.
To help address these requests, we prepared a State of the School to provide some additional context to the District as a whole.
Keep an eye out for our new publication in this weekend’s edition of the Genesee Valley Penny Saver or click on the link below to read it on our website.

Due to an error on the part of the Genesee Valley Penny Saver, our summer newsletter did not run in last week’s Penny Saver.
It will be delivered in this weekend’s Penny Saver instead and is also up our website at the link below.
We apologize for the mixup!

Great discussion this morning between our architectural and engineering partners and members of our Elementary School’s capital project stakeholder group.
Lots of exciting decisions to be made here in Avon!
Our middle schoolers got a bit of a jump on summer at field day yesterday…
Great trip to Niagara Falls yesterday with our eighth graders.
Sun, spray, sightseeing - what else do you need?!

Happy Juneteenth, Avon!
Our nation’s newest federal holiday can trace its roots to June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger announced to the people of Galveston, Tx., General Order No. 3, which served to formally inform Texas residents that slavery had ended.
As President Joe Biden observed during a recent concert in celebration of the holiday at the White House, “Juneteenth, as a federal holiday, is meant to breathe new life into the very essence of America, to make sure all Americans feel the power of this day and the progress we can make as a country; to choose love over hate, unity over disunion, and progress over retreat.”
The accompanying photograph shows a celebration of Emancipation Day - a precursor to Juneteenth - in Richmond, Virginia, circa 1905.
How cool is this?
Back in 2017, when they were in the sixth grade, our class of 2023 buried a time capsule next to the elementary school.
Each student was given a ziplock bag into which they placed a letter to their future selves and whatever else they could fit. Then, all our students’ baggies were placed in a length of eight-inch PVC pipe, which was sealed with a pair of end caps and buried beneath the dirt.
Last week, our seniors dug the capsule up and cut it open - 2,177 days after it was buried.
Seniors read the letters from their past selves and checked out the items they’d buried.
Dev C. chose to put a watch in his baggie. After digging it up, the watch still ticked, though its time was off.
Taylen B. placed a single goldfish cracker in her baggie along with the pledge to eat it when she was a senior. Don’t worry, she didn’t end up going through with it (at least we don’t think she did…).

Shout out to Mr. Tim Baumer’s class for successfully defending their client against Mr. Darren Leonard’s plaintiff team during our sixth graders’ Mock Trial last week.
The civil case centered on the attractive nuisance doctrine and whether a property owner was liable for the injuries two children sustained after falling near a well on his property.
After presenting relevant evidence and examining the property owner, victim and other witnesses on the stand, Baumer’s students convinced a jury their client was not liable for the children’s injuries.
A special thank you to students from Scott Forrest’s and Lisa Lafferty’s reading classes, who made up our jury, and to Livingston County Judge Kevin Van Allen, who presided over the trial in our Middle School Library.
We wanted to take a moment to congratulate one of our bus drivers, Frank Young, who’s retiring after 17 years with Avon and more than 30 in the business.
Frank’s been an integral part of the Transportation Department for nearly two decades and always got students where they needed to go quickly and safely.
Congratulations on your upcoming retirement, Frank - we’ll miss you!
Really not sure how points were calculated but shout out to our seniors, who topped their freshmen, sophomore and junior rivals to win the Avon Olympics last week.
Few shots from our Senior Parade last week.
State Skeet Champion: Shout out to junior Alissa K., who captured the New York State High School Clay Target League’s scoring average title in skeet shooting this past weekend.
Alissa’s average for the 2023 spring skeet season was 20.60 - 2 points ahead of the second place finisher.
Congratulations, Alissa!
Hey you - yeah, you!
You’re hereby invited to our Senior Art Show tonight - Wednesday, June 7 at 6 p.m. in our Middle School Auditorium lobby, right before the Senior Awards Ceremony, which begins at 6:30 p.m.
Our seniors have worked very hard to prepare their work for display and would love for you to see it - we guarantee you’ll be impressed!
