Give it up for Avon’s newest sectional champions, juniors Dominic P. and Austin L., who won the Section V Class B2 doubles title this weekend in Canandaigua. "I am so proud of Dom and Austin with their performance this weekend at individual sectionals,” said Head Coach Adam Wheeler. “They have both been working hard at leading our team as singles players and simultaneously, working hard developing their doubles game and improving on their doubles strategy.” Competing in a pro set, race to 10 games format, Dom and Austin went 4-0 during their title-winning run Saturday and Sunday, besting teams from Attica, Addison, Le Roy and East Rochester by scores of 10-1, 10-0, 10-9 and 10-3. “Singles and doubles are entirely different strategies so this championship is a true testament to their hard work and dedication to becoming the best in the section,” added Wheeler. “Their friendship is evident on the court with their chemistry as a doubles team and it was a lot of fun to sit back and watch their hard work be rewarded.” With a sectional title now in hand, Dom and Austin will next travel to Brockport High School Thursday, May 18, for state qualifier matches against the top 4 doubles teams from classes A and B for a chance to compete in the New York State Championships at the USTA’s Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York City. As part of their Ellis Island immigration simulation yesterday afternoon, each of our fourth grade students were assigned a character of a would-be immigrant to the United States stating their age, occupation and country of origin, among other things. After boarding a ship for their transatlantic voyage according to their ticket tier - 1st class or steerage - students moved through stations in adjoining classrooms where they faced the prospect of navigating the United States’ immigration system on Ellis Island as it existed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Before they could successfully immigrate to the U.S., students’ assigned characters were subject to medical screenings, legal background checks and, ultimately, a citizenship test. If a student’s assigned character was displaying symptoms of illness, was too old or weak to work, had a history of criminal activity in their home country, had an occupation that wasn’t highly valued or answered questions incorrectly on their citizenship test, that student’s character faced deportation and the possibility of having to begin the immigration process again from the beginning. All of our fourth graders eventually made it through the immigration process, then came together in the Elementary School Library for a group discussion about the experience.

We had the PERFECT day Saturday for the Special Olympics of New York’s Super Regional Track and Field Competition. About 200 athletes from more than a dozen local clubs made the trip to Avon this year to compete in traditional and modified track and field events and make memories with fellow athletes. This is the second straight year we’ve hosted this event here in Avon and we were so excited to help create such a special and rewarding day for all our participating athletes. A huge thank you to all our volunteers and to senior Destiny P. for capturing all these great shots!

We were happy to play host to New York Times best-selling author Janae Marks today at Avon Central Schools. The author of “From the Desk of Zoe Washington,” “On Air With Zoe Washington” and “A Soft Place to Land,” Marks spoke with our fourth, fifth and sixth graders about her path to becoming a published author and her writing process. Marks also led a workshop on how to create authentic and compelling characters, giving students some tips on how to harness things like background, motivation and conflict to make characters readers are interested in learning more about. Thank you, Janae, for spending some time with us today and for signing so many autographs for our students - we hope your hand isn’t TOO sore!

Our teachers have been feeling the love from the Avon Braves PTA all week for Teacher Appreciation Week. PTA members have been spoiling our teachers each day with pizza, coffee, cookies, donuts and other treats. Today, they left packs of gum in our faculty rooms! We’re lucky to have such a supportive community that recognizes just how incredible our teachers are! Thank you, PTA!

Yesterday was Decision Day here at Avon High School and with that, and there only being 52 days left to go until graduation, it seemed like a good time to take a beat and recognize our seniors - many of whom will be attending college next year - for all they’ve done here at Avon and all that’s still ahead of them.
