Our student athletes had a great day of learning at Section V’s Leadership Summit Tuesday at SUNY Geneseo. Five of our student athletes - Megan M., Remy G., Josh H., Kaitlyn G. and Maggie V. - attended this year’s summit. Student athletes from nearly four dozen schools across the region heard presentations from Erica Ebert, a staff development trainer in social and emotional learning for Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES who led a training on mindfulness, Pete McCabe, a football referee, who spoke on the importance of sportsmanship, and longtime Fairport boys basketball coach Scott Fitch, who spoke on the power of social media to create positive and negative outcomes.

Students in Leigh Major’s marketing class traveled to Geneseo today to discuss current and projected food industry trends with representatives of Wegmans. Major said the trip is part of an ongoing project for her students to come up with a new product and associated marketing campaign which they’ll pitch to the grocery store chain later this year. “We will be discussing new products and consumer behaviors. Then, students will brainstorm new ideas for the company, going through the research and development process for a new prototype or product,” she said. “Once the prototype has been selected and developed, they will begin creating a promotional strategy for the new product.” Students will present their new product idea or prototype to Wegmans representatives in the High School Library in June. “We will have two judges from corporate and the store manager and assistant manager from Geneseo,” said Major. Many thanks to Wegmans for hosting us today - and for the free samples - and best of luck to our marketing students. We can’t wait to see what you come up with! (Photos courtesy of Leigh Major)

Nearly two dozen Avon students were among the more than 600 from 28 districts across the region who traveled to Genesee Community College Friday for GLOW with Your Hands Healthcare, a career exploration event geared toward healthcare-related professions. Friday’s expo was in the same vein of a similarly-named event held at the Genesee County Fairgrounds in September, which focused on local career opportunities in the skilled trades. The inaugural GLOW With Your Hands Healthcare event welcomed dozens of healthcare organizations from various sectors of the industry, including hospitals and health systems and career opportunities in nursing, mental health, social services and first responders as well as educational pathways into healthcare through BOCES, local colleges and universities. “Based on our success of engaging the future workforce with employers across the GLOW region in the manufacturing, agriculture and skilled trades sectors, we were optimistic that this same type of format would benefit healthcare providers and more importantly students who have an interest in a career in healthcare,” said Angela Grouse, Education to Employment Director at the Livingston County Area Chamber of Commerce and Co-Chair of GLOW With Your Hands Healthcare. “With the current staffing challenges in the healthcare system especially in rural areas, vendors recognized the benefit of participating and engaged enthusiastically.” For more information about the event, click on the link below. Congratulations to Mia H., Hudson V. and Sarina M., who were named to Ronald McDonald All-Star teams for cheerleading, boys basketball and girls basketball, respectively. Mia, Hudson and Sarina will perform and compete at the Greater Rochester Ronald McDonald House High School All-Star Basketball Games at Rush-Henrietta March 25. Proceeds from the two games benefit local Ronald McDonald House charities. Only the best of the best from Section V earn a roster spot on these teams, so Mia’s, Hudson’s and Sarina’s selection is a huge honor.

Congratulations to Preston M. and Cliff C., our Elementary School Music Students of the Month for February! Each month, Music Teacher Mrs. Kaylee Corell picks two students of the month - one from third and fourth grade and one from first and second grade. Students are chosen for this recognition based on how frequently they make Corell’s “Wall of Fame” for things like playing or singing a song well, answering a difficult music question correctly or displaying exceptional behavior and focus. Preston was the winner for third and fourth grade while Cliff was the winner from first and second grade. Keep up the good work, you two!

Wellness consultant Dan Justis has previously led mindfulness workshops for our staff during professional development days but today, he spoke with a few of our high school health classes about some of the research behind and benefits of mindfulness practices, then led them in a meditative breathwork exercise they can use in the future. This was a great mini-mindfulness lesson designed to help our students become more intentional about the way they interact with the world around them. Plus, it was super relaxing - we could feel our blood pressure decreasing just while taking these photos!

Our Level II PageTurners team wrapped up its season in style this morning in York, coming one point away from a first place finish on the day and finishing second overall on the season. With just three members - sixth graders Ben K. and Delaney M. and seventh grader Emily J. - our team was by far the smallest. “I am so proud of their hard work and dedication throughout the season,” said Coach Jessica Mucci. “Second place is a huge accomplishment and they represented Avon proudly!” Congratulations to our Level II PageTurners!
