Did you know our own pre-kindergarten teacher Mrs. Sara Brown is also a published author? It’s true!
“The inspiration for writing my children’s books comes from actual experiences in my classroom,” said Brown, who’s taught at Avon Elementary School for nearly 20 years. “I come home on many evenings with funny stories from the school day that I share with my family and they often encourage me to write books about some of them.”
Brown has penned four children’s books in her Madelyn and Miguel’s Language Learning Adventure series.
“I was inspired to write the series when I was looking for resources to use with my pre-K students who were learning new languages,” said Brown. “Not finding what I was looking for, I decided to create them myself.”
The first book in the series, “Madelyn’s Crayons,” follows the eponymous character as she uses crayons to draw familiar objects. Other books in the series follow Madelyn as she packs her backpack, takes the bus and navigates her first day of school.
Currently, Brown’s working on a new series featuring Madelyn’s brother, Miguel. The first in the planned four-book series, “Miguel’s Mighty Trucks,” will follow Miguel as he plays with and counts his toy trucks and is intended to help young children learn counting words in Spanish and English.
“My newest book, ‘Definitely,’ was released earlier this month,” said Brown. “This book is a more traditional picture book that was inspired by a former kindergarten class that touched me every day with their consistent, thoughtful care for one another. It focuses on the kindness and empathy that students share with a young friend, Matthew, as he experiences challenges during the school day.”
As luck would have it, Brown is attending the Young Readers’ Book Festival at the Little Lakes Community Center in Hemlock later this week! She’ll be reading some of her new books and hosting some fun activities for attendees.
The festival is scheduled for March 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Little Lakes Community Center, 4705 South Main St., Hemlock. There is no cost to attend. Brown’s read-aloud time is 1 p.m.
