    • File a notice of Intent to Homeschool within 14 days of beginning, and every year thereafter
    • Provide an Individualized Home Instruction Plan and an Annual Plan for Instruction and Evaluation
    • Note the subjects required to be taught at specific grade levels
    • Maintain attendance records
    • Complete 900 hours of school instruction per year in grades 1-6, and 990 hours for grades 7-12
    • Submit your Quarterly Reports
    • Submit an Annual Assessment with your final Quarterly Report

NYS has very specific requirements to homeschool your child. The regulations listed here are a summary to help parents get started.
For more information on home instruction NYS compliance visit the the NYS Department of Education’s website for the latest information on staying compliant.

  • Record Keeping

    • When homeschooling, it is important to stay on track to ensure you have the necessary requirements completed. We strongly recommend keeping copies of all IHIPs, APIEs, Quarterly Reports, and Annual Evaluations. Verification of homeschooling cannot be given if your child's program is not in complete compliance with NYS guidelines.
    • Please plan to complete a full review of your child's transcript during the final year of home instruction. An audit of this information can be conducted via the Office of Academic Programs at Avon Central School District and will be done if a Letter of Equivalency is requested.

What is a Letter of Equivalency?

    • It is not a diploma. It is not a certificate of graduation. It IS a letter that states the requirements in Part 100.10 of the New York State Regulations for Home Instruction were adhered to.

    • After all documentation has been accounted for, including the final fourth quarter report and annual assessment, you may request a Letter of Equivalency from the Superintendent. This process can take some time so please plan accordingly. Again, you must request a Letter of Equivalency. It is not automatically provided.
