Our varsity girls track and field athletes are rolling into peak season right on cue with numerous PRs Friday at the Livingston County Athletic Association championships at Caledonia-Mumford.
Our girls scored in 6 events with the Hawks’ top finish coming in the 4x800-meter relay thanks to a huge effort from Sophia P., Emma G., Kaelyn M. and Maria G. who captured 2nd place with a time of 10:28.61.
“Our girls team continues to show great promise,” said Head Coach Josh Williams. “We are seeing the hard work pay off and looking forward to seeing what we can do against the best of Section V next week.”
Maria G. also scored additional points for Avon with a 4th place finish in the 3,000-meter run and a 5th place finish in the 800-meter run.
“Maria has shown great leadership on and off the track, her hard work and dedication are second to none,” said Williams. “It’s been incredible seeing her progress.”
Also scoring for Avon was Molly G. in the 100-meter hurdles where she took 5th with a time of 18.13.
The 1,500 was a great race for the River Hawks as Sophia P. was 4th with a time of 5:27.16, Emma G. took 6th with a time of 5:29.25 and Megan K. was 7th with a time of 5:36.24.
7th grader Liliana B. put up a PR in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 12:24.83, likely qualifying her for sectionals next week.
“We’ve got some things to clean up this week in practice before sectionals,” said Williams. “Our best races and marks are still in front of us.”
