6th graders among winners in National Baseball Poetry Festival Youth Poetry Contest

Posted Date: 6/25/25 (10:47 PM)

Join us in congratulating 6th graders Caitlyn L., Ethan H., Peter B. and Mason P. - all of whom were recognized as winners in the National Baseball Poetry Festival’s Youth Poetry Contest last month!

The National Baseball Poetry Festival is an annual celebration of poetry and other short written and spoken-word pieces whose themes focus on baseball.

“Submissions for the youth contest were accepted from students in grades 4 through 12 and up to 20 middle school students were selected as award winners,” said 6th grade teacher Darren Leonard, who entered his writing students’ poems in the festival. “Worcester has a special connection to baseball poetry because it is the birthplace of Ernest Lawrence Thayer, the author of ‘Casey at the Bat.”

In addition to award certificates, which Leonard’s students received last month, our four winning poets will also receive t-shirts from the festival.

Make sure you read Caitlyn’s, Ethan’s, Peter’s and Mason’s winning poems below!
