Maria G. is January's 'Featured Photographer'
Give it up for our featured photographer for January, senior Maria G.!
For her feature, Maria chose three untitled photos she captured in October at Rochester’s Lamberton Conservatory during a field trip with Danielle Howard’s photography class.
The first photo, shown above, is an extreme close up of a flowering plant and is an excellent example of the impact of color as the plant’s bright red stem, white and pale purple petals and fuchsia leaves in the background imbue the piece with an ample vibrancy.
Maria’s second photo, above, shows a row of potted plants in one of the conservancy’s greenhouses that appear smaller and smaller as they move farther and farther away from her lens. The photo makes good use of repetition in its composition, with the repeating flower pots creating an apparent sense of perspective.
Her third and final photo, above, shows the trunk of a large tree trunk that’s been hollowed out so as to allow a person to walk through. Maria said the carved away void in the trunk, coupled with the remaining wood surrounding it, struck her as a perfect example of negative and positive space.
In her three submissions and as a general rule, Maria said she tries to capture photos that feature additional elements beyond just those that would be immediately apparent at first viewing.
“I enjoy taking photos that have more to look at and more detail to observe,” she said.
Thank you, Maria, for sharing some of your work with us!
