WATCH NOW: High schoolers compete in Interscholastic Competition in English

Posted Date: 01/14/26 (11:46 AM)

Two members of our Interscholastic Competition in English team captured top 6 finishes yesterday at SUNY Geneseo.

An annual competition sponsored by Genesee Valley BOCES, ICE tests three-member teams in three distinct areas of English: Literary analysis, creative writing and dramatic presentation.

Competing in the dramatic performance category, senior Brandon H. took 5th place for his performance of The Fact Checker monologue from the play “Goodbye Charles,” by Gabriel Davis. In this monologue, a young man grapples with the reluctant realization that he’s fallen in love with his childhood best friend’s girlfriend.

Junior Liliana V. likewise took 5th place in the creative writing category, which required her to submit two compositions.

The first, which Liliana completed back in November, was capped at 500 words and required her to write an essay or story on one of five topics: “Alone,” “Unexplained Territory,” “Through My Eyes,” “Sweet Hawaiian Surf” and “My Determination.”

Liliana’s piece, “Fated To Be Alone,” centered on a recently widowed woman who reflects on the constant presence of loneliness in her life.

For the second prompt, competitors were given two hours and 100 words the morning of the competition to write a “concise reaction” to the following quote attributed to Muhammad Ali: “Friendship is the hardest thing in the world to explain. It’s not something you learn in school. But if you haven’t learned the meaning of friendship, you really haven’t learned anything.”

Liliana’s piece charts the relationship of  an owl and an eagle who are initially skeptical of one another but eventually develop an, if not friendship, at least mutual respect.

For the literary analysis portion of the competition, students completed a 50- to 75-question exam that tasked them with analyzing:

  • A short video clip

  • Two or three essays or short stories that are classics of the English literary canon

  • Two or three poems - likewise considered classics of English

  • A piece of flash fiction

Two of Geneseo’s three teams tied for first with the third placing 5th as the Blue Devils re-captured the ICE Cup after losing for the first time in more than a decade to Livonia last year.

Competing in the dramatic performance category, senior Brandon H., second from right above, took 5th place for his performance of The Fact Checker monologue from the play “Goodbye Charles,” by Gabriel Davis. In this monologue, a young man grapples with the reluctant realization that he’s fallen in love with his childhood best friend’s girlfriend. In the creative writing category, junior Liliana V., second from right above, took 5th place on the strength of her two submissions. The first, “Fated To Be Alone,” centered on a recently widowed woman who reflects on the constant presence of loneliness in her life. The second, a concise reaction to a Muhammad Ali quote about friendship, charted the relationship of an owl and an eagle who are initially skeptical of one another but eventually develop an, if not friendship, at least mutual respect.

Junior Lucy M., above, performed Ursula’s monologue, from “Trust.” In this monologue, Ursula has a heated reaction after walking in on her husband in a compromising situation with another woman.
