Flag football drops season opener to Hornell

Your Avon River Hawks dropped their season opener last night, falling to the Hornell Red Raiders 7-28 at home. 


The Hawks got on the board first early in the second quarter when senior quarterback Olivia S. connected with sophomore receiver Megan K. on a 3-yard touchdown pass, then ran in the extra point attempt to put the score at 7-0. 


The Raiders answered back quickly, scoring in the waning seconds of the 2nd quarter to put the score at 7 apiece headed into halftime. 


In the second half, Avon would feel the loss of junior Vivianne B., the Hawks’ 2025 offensive player of the year, who exited the game late in the first quarter with a knee injury and did not return. 


Hornell scored once in the 3rd to take the 14-7 lead, then twice again in the fourth to seal the 28-7 victory. The Raiders moved to 2-0 on the season with the win while Avon fell to 0-1. 


The Hawks were led offensively by quarterback Olivia S., who went 5-16 passing for 71 yards and a score and had 10 carries for 44 yards.


Junior Bridget R. hauled in two passes for 50 yards while freshman Olivia C. gained 56 yards on just 7 carries.


On defense, sophomore Aiyanna B. led the team with 7 flag pulls, including 4 for a loss. Olivia W. has 6 pulls and a pick while Olivia C. and Olivia S. had 6 and 5 pulls, respectively. 


The Hawks are next in action Tuesday, March 31 at Livonia.
