Middle school science students welcome hatchlings

Posted Date: 05/21/26 (01:24 PM)

We stopped by Mrs. Leah Young’s 7th grade science class this morning to meet Avon Middle School’s newest additions - a clutch of recently hatched chicks!

Young and her 7th grade life sciences students have been incubating the chicks for the past few weeks as part of a biology unit and on Monday, they finally hatched!

The chicks have been living in a pen in Young’s room since and today, students had a chance to get to know them a little better.

The chicks will eventually head to the home of Mr. Mike McGough, a special education teacher in our middle school who donated the eggs to Young’s class in the first place.

McGough’s raised chickens for the past few years and will eventually add Young’s new hatchlings to this year’s flock.
