4x800 relay takes title at C2 championships

Posted Date: 06/01/26 (09:40 AM)

Your varsity girls track and field squad took 5th in the Section V Class C2 Championships Friday at Sodus High School, its highest overall team finish since its 2nd place finish in 2021.

Leading the way for our girls squad was the 4x800-meter relay team of Maria G., Sophia P., Emma G. and Kaelyn M., who captured our girls team’s first sectional patch since 2021.

The fearsome foursome ran a 9:50.01, nearly 40 seconds ahead of second place finisher and the second fastest time the team has put up in the event this season.

This is our girls varsity track program’s first sectional title in any event since 2021.

Sophia P., a junior, led our varsity squad in scoring. In addition to the 4x800, she competed in 3 other events, earning podium finishes in all of them. She took 3rd in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 11:46.34, 4th in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 5:15.79 and 4th as a member of the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:31.49.

Emma G., an 8th grader, was the next big scorer for the girls’ team, also competing and scoring in 3 other events for the day. She took 3rd in the 2,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 7:47.46, 5th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:31.93 and 4th as a member of the 4x400-meter relay.

8th grader Kaelyn M. scored big with her 3rd place finish in the 400-meter (1:01.78) and joined teammates Sophia, Emma and sophomore Abigail C. in earning a 4th place finish in the 4x400-meter relay.

Mollie G. did more than round things out for the River Hawks as the senior left her mark with a 3rd place finish in triple jump (32 feet, 11.25 inches), 6th place in long jump (15 feet, 5.75 inches) and 6th place in the 100-meter Hurdles (18.00).

Our boys squad took 9th as a team. Scoring performances came from:
• Blayden B.: 2nd place in pentathlon (2,576 points)
• Luigi M.: 3rd place in the 1,600-meter run (4:48.08) and 6th in the 800-meter run (2:11.60)
• Owen H.: 3rd place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:22.20)
• Francesco M.: 5th place in the 800-meter run (2:08.02)
• Brice B.: 6th place in triple jump (39 feet, 0.25 inches)
• John D.: 6th place in high jump (5 feet, 4 inches)
• 4x800-meter relay team of Dylan H., Owen H., Luigi M. and Francesco M: 3rd place (8:57.77)
• 4x400-meter relay team of Luigi M., John D., Dylan H. and Francesco M.: 6th place (3:48.15)

The Hawks now turn their attention to the Division III State Qualifier meet, set for Saturday, June 6 at Caledonia-Mumford High School, 99 North St., Caledonia.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do this week, but we know both the girls and boys are ready to fight to get a chance to go to the state championship meet,” said Head Coach Samantha Walker. “We couldn’t be more proud of our entire team for their accomplishments at sectionals and especially for our girls’ 4x800-meter relay team. After a 2nd place finish in the event last year at sectionals, they’ve been eagerly putting in the work all season to fill their hunger for that patch. These girls trust in each other like no other and it was an emotional race to watch. They’ll be ready to fight again next week to earn their spot at states and we can’t wait to see them do their thing!”
