Hawks fall in homecoming hearbreaker

Heartbreaker for our boys out on the turf Friday night as they fell to visiting Geneseo/Mount Morris by a single point, 42-43, on homecoming. 

Avon led by as much as 16 points during the game and headed into the half tied with Geneseo/Mount Morris at 22 apiece. 

The two teams traded blows throughout the second half until late in the fourth quarter when senior quarterback Hunter S. and junior receiver Will S. linked up on a 25-yard catch and run touchdown to take the 42-35 lead and put the pressure back on Geneseo/Mount Morris with 1:20 left in the game. 

Starting at their own 35, Geneseo/Mount Morris put together a 65-yard drive that ended when junior quarterback Gavin Johnson found junior receiver Shay Hepler over the middle for a 4-yard touchdown. Geneseo/Mount Morris then converted the 2-point attempt, pushing the score to 43-42. 

The Hawks did their best to answer back and actually got the ball back to Geneseo/Mount Morris’s 28-yard line, but a Hail Mary pass with just 2.7 seconds left on the clock was batted down in the end zone to deliver Geneseo/Mount Morris the upset win and hand Avon its first loss of the season. 

With the loss, the Hawks fell to 2-1 on the season while Geneseo/Mount Morris improved to 2-1. 

The Hawks are next in action Friday, Sept. 25 at Attica. Game time is 7 p.m.
