Student council members elected at Avon Elementary

We’re excited to announce that Avon Elementary School will once again field a student council! 

“Students who decided to run had to submit an application, hang their posters up in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade hallways and give a speech to their class on why they should be elected,” explained Lexi McTarnaghan, a counselor at Avon Elementary who also serves as student council advisor. “Then classes voted for who they think would be the best representative for their class after the speeches.”

Student council is about much more than organizing a spirit week or planning special events. It is an opportunity for students to develop valuable leadership skills while learning how to listen, collaborate, solve problems and make a meaningful difference in their school community.

Throughout the year, our elementary school council members will represent the voices and ideas of their classmates, help plan school-wide initiatives and events, build confidence and contribute to a positive and inclusive school culture. They will help create and lead activities and challenges centered on our district’s core values of kindness, integrity and community and work together to solve problems that affect their peers.  

Student council members will also serve as positive role models for other students by demonstrating responsibility, respect, kindness and school spirit. Through these experiences, students will have the opportunity to strengthen their leadership skills, make their voices heard, and play an active role in making our school an even better place to learn and grow.

After tallying the votes last week, McTarnaghan announced the winners at the elementary school pep rally Friday afternoon.
